Sinchon Streets; Sinchon Foods

Sinchon is a huge district area containing some famous Korea universities in Seoul: Hongik, Yonsei, and Ewha -basically because of the busy scenes. Because of the many students and tourists visiting this area, there are restaurants every where. From BBQ to Japanese food, Sinchon is quite international with their foods.

But for this food series post, I'll focus only on restaurants near Line 2 Sinchon station. Restaurants in the Ewha area is available on another post.

1. Homilpat

Homilpat is famous for the fine ice in their red bean ice shaving dish. It's so fine you'd think it's sherbet. Well, that's what they call it. I know I said Homilpat is located in Ewha, but the location is right not he border of Sinchon and Ewha. For directions, click here.

2. Butanchu Ramen (NOT HALAL)

This is a Japanese ramen eatery run by Japanese. I'm not sure if they are students or full time staff, but they are all Japanese, fluent in both languages. The food tastes authentic, not having a globalized taste. They give customers the chance to order their ramen according to their own taste buds and cravings. Because of the authenticity is service and taste, Japanese tourists visit to taste for themselves. It's so famous Korean celebrity Defconn has visited, amongst other Korean and Japanese celebrity visitors.
For the broth, there are four levels of concentration. The smaller the number, the stronger the taste. 1 is popular with the men while 2 is popular with the women. Personally, 3 was good enough for me.
For the noodle, you can choose between three kinds of noodles: the thin, the squiggly, or the dragon noodles. The dragon noodles is like the knife-cut noodles in Korea, while the squiggly is a chewier, harder version of the Korean instant ramen. The thin noodles were my favorite, because it was just nice with the chewiness and not too thin.
The egg is also like the Japanese hard-boiled egg for ramen dishes.
The awesome thing about this place is the free refill. You can try another kind of noodles if you have leftover broth. I'm not sure whether the broth is refillable. For KRW7,000, the food was a steal!

Broth levels 1-4

Hoso (thin), Chiji(squiggly), Dragon

Hoso Level 3

Dragon Level 2

Squiggly refill
The downside: HEAT. Because of the boiling broth, the place may be a little hot. But there's cold water to help you out, so what the hey.

Sadly, I cannot remember the directions because someone else had brought me here and I didn't think it would be this good. If I manage to find it, I'll update.

3. Sin Sun Seolleongtang

Don't underestimate the simplicity of this restaurant's appearance. This franchise sells awesome beef soup that will warm your stomach on a cold day. Their menu serves a variety of beef soup bases, cooked using beef bones, briskets or other cuts.
While other Korean soups can feel clear or refreshing, their beef soup gives you the warm fuzzy feeling of healing. having boiled the beef cuts for hours, the soup achieves a milky, buttery taste while avoiding the greasy texture of butter. Of course, they serve their soup with a warm bowl of rice that you can choose to pour into your soup. And their radish kimchi is the bomb!
In addition, they have options of adding Mandu (dumplings) into your beef soup. At the price of KRW8,000 and the satisfaction of a warmed stomach, I find it to be reasonable and affordable.
Directions:
[Sinchon] From Line 2 Sinchon Station Exit 2 or the U-plex underground exit, walk cross the road to the street diagonally opposite the giant red mirror outside U-plex. You should be walking down Myeongmul-gil. Walk down the street for about 3 minutes. Sin Sun Seolleongtang should be on your right, before you reach Olive Young.
[Ewha] From Ewha Woman's University, turn left towards the Sinchon train station and walk further down. Go past Homilpat and walk for another 3 minutes. Sin Sun Seolleongtang will be on your left, after you pass Olive Young.
